I have to do this charcoal piece right now and I have no idea what I'm doing, really. Are you shading with the dull points of the charcoal sticks and then smudging? Any pointers would be cool.
I used compressed charcoal, makes nice blacks. Also a thick ruff paper, lends to a lot of working, and reworking. Adding and subtracting, carving things out with an eraser, I use a white eraser, no pink marks. I am smudging, but not all time, depending on the texture you want.
not a bad set up. the contrast from dark to light is nicely expressed. The main piece in the picture is very well expressed. Can't wait to see your next piece.
